On Sunday, the ongoing government shutdown in the United States entered its 20th day, with no end in sight, after the Senate failed to pass a measure for temporary funding on an October 16, Thursday vote - the 10th, so far. The shutdown is unlikely to end soon, but the US Senate will be voting on it again on Monday, October 20, when session resumes.
In the last vote on the government shutdown, the GOP and the Democratic Senators continued to remain in a deadlock. The key disagreement has been the inclusion of healthcare tax subsidies that was hitherto a part of the government spending bill but was not included in Trump's ‘Big Beautiful’ spending bill.
Democrats are pressing hard for the inclusion, warning that the failure to do so will result in a significant increase in health insurance premiums.
The GOP, following President Trump's command, had refused to cave in to the Democrats' demands. The GOP and the Trump administration have argued that the issue is best dealt with separately, and not as a provision of the government spending bill.
Meanwhile, the shutdown has left millions of federal employees furloughed, meaning they are working with deferred pay till the impasse ends.

The next Senate vote on the shutdown is roughly around 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday, October 20. The Senate resumes on Monday at 3 p.m. ET for discussion around the government shutdown. At around 5:30 p.m., after two and a half hours of discussions, the Senate is set to vote on a government shutdown.
However, given the deadlock between the two sides, it is likely that the discussion at the Senate on Monday could continue for more than 2.5 hours. In which case, the vote could also take place later in the evening.
