A coalition statement on Saturday says insurgents armed with guns and rockets attacked Afghan and coalition forces on patrol on Friday in Uruzgan province.

It says the troops returned fire and called in airstrikes and 32 insurgents were killed. A 10-year-old boy and two Afghan policemen were wounded.

Fighting between security forces and Islamic militants is flaring across the southern half of the country. According to an Associated Press tally, more than 2,000 people have died in insurgency-related violence so far this year.
