A total of 52 passengers were injured, of whom two seriously, when the engine of the train, that had one coach, hit a concrete buffer at the railway station, a Croatian Railways official said.
Before arriving in Zagreb the train stopped at 11 stations without any problems, Marijan Klaric told national radio adding that a commission was probing the cause of the accident.
Police said earlier that the train was arriving from Sisak, some 60 kilometers southeast of the Croatian capital, when it "failed to stop due to still unknown reasons."
The accident occurred at 0956 IST, a police spokeswoman said. National television reported that the train's brakes failed most likely due to extremely low temperatures of around minus 17 degrees Celsius at the time of the accident.
The state-run HINA news agency reported that one of the injured suffered life threatening injuries while most of them escaped with bruising and pulled muscles. The engine-driver was also slightly injured.
The whole of Croatia was covered by heavy snowy and freezing temperatures at the weekend.
