A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska but no tsunami warning was issued, US monitors said.

The quake occurred 63 kilometers east of Amatignak Island yesterday, Alaska at a depth of 40 kilometers, said the US Geological Service, which monitors earthquakes worldwide, at 2340 GMT.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected and nor was there a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
