Replying to a question at his press conference on Tuesday, Ban said that he had telephoned President Mahinda Rajapaksa from India and expressed his “deep concern” over the high number of civilian casualties.

Rajapaksa, the UN chief said, assured him that he would take all measures to safeguard the civilian population.

“I stressed that all actions must be taken consistent with principles of international humanitarian law,” Ban added.
