Credible claims that several members of a gang of terrorists who kidnapped two European photographers in Syria last month may have been from England have set alarm bells ringing in Britain.

The claims, made by Briton John Cantlie and Dutch Jeroen Oerlemans following their release on July 26 after a week’s captivity, are being taken “very seriously,” a British foreign office spokesman said.

The pair of photographers were held hostage by jihadists after crossing into Syria from Turkey but were freed by the Syrian armed opposition group FSA. Cantlie later said that none of the terrorists were Syrian.
