State Public Safety Secretary Damian Canales Mena says the officers were checking out a tip that a body was in the trunk when the vehicle exploded.

Canales Mena says investigators suspect the Zetas drug cartel is behind yesterday's attack in the town of Tula.

He says it could be revenge for the recent killings of several cartel members by police.

Hidalgo is the home state of alleged Zetas leader Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano and a central transit point for drugs.
