A car bomb exploded in a car park in the city of Bilbao in Spain's Basque Country today, police said.

Newspaper El Mundo said on its website that one person, possibly an official's bodyguard, might have been killed and radio reported flames bursting from the vehicle in the Santa Isabel neighbourhood.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but such bombings have regularly been carried out by Basque guerrillas ETA, who have killed more than 800 people in decades of struggle for independence of the Basque Country.
