There were no casualties reported on either side but details were still sketchy, because the fighting was in a mountainous area about 600 kilometres northwest of the capital, Kathmandu.
Troops were dispatched to Muria from nearby camps after the government received information that rebels were extorting villagers, an army commander reached on the telephone said.
The soldiers came upon the rebels as they were leaving Muria, and a gunbattle broke out, with the rebels taking cover in the village and fleeing, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to army policy.
