But there's good news too. Authorities say seven people have been rescued.
The tornado tore a six-mile-long, half-mile wide (1-kilometer long, 10-kilometer wide) path through the middle of Joplin on Sunday. Much of the city of Joplin's south side was leveled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins by winds of up to 165 mph (265 kph). Officials have estimated 2,000 buildings were damaged.
Joplin is about 160 miles (257 kilometers) south of Kansas City.
