Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern, who lost to Richard Nixon in 1972, died Sunday at the age of 90.

His campaign had suffered when his running mate, Thomas Eagleton, was forced to quit the ticket after it emerged he had been hospitalised thrice and given electroshock therapy.

He lost to Nixon in a dramatic landslide, winning only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. However, he was credited with expanding the Democratic base by bringing in women, youths and minorities.
