The fire was apparently set off by a pyrotechnics show gone wrong on Saturday during the concert attended by about 100 people at the Factory nightclub, said Red Cross spokeswoman Cristina Medina.

"We have counted 15 dead," she said.

Cesar Enriquez, a firefighter, said another 45 people suffered burns.

Medina said she feared that several people suffered serious injuries.

The nightclub is located just 500 metres from the main commercial center in the southern area of the capital, and near the city's trolley bus terminal.

The nightclub had cardboard and fabric decorations, according to local radio reports.
