‘French more opposed to free trade than Chinese’

The French are more opposed to free market capitalism than the inhabitants of Communist China and other advanced economies, an opinion poll published on Wednesday by pollster IFOP.

Nearly 33% of French people believe it is time to abandon capitalism, the highest proportion among the 10 countries surveyed. 3 per cent of Chinese questioned capitalism while 65% of the Chinese said the current system was working well and should not be changed.

On the other hand, 63% of Australians, 57% of Brazilians and 55% of United States citizens also supported capitalist system. Chinese were the most convinced that wider international trade was in their interest, with 90% answering "yes". United States was the most negative about the impact of expanding international trade (39%).
