However, no loss of life has been reported.

The flames took hold just after 0400 GMT (0930 HRS IST) at the building on Tabernacle Street, Shoreditch.

About 20 fire engines are still at the scene, a fire service spokesman said. More that 100 firefighters are trying to control the blaze.

London Fire Brigade said the ground floor and part of the first floor of the building were alight, Sky News reported.

The Metropolitan Police said a number of roads in the area have been closed, including part of City Road south of Old Street, Bloomberg Square and Worship Street.

The report quoted the spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade as saying that officers are investigating reports that people were inside in the building.
