Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was let go because the Prison Department didn’t receive formal instructions from the Islamic Shariah court, which had sentenced her, to take her in for caning, officials said.
She could still be whipped once the confusion is cleared.
Earlier Monday, two female and one male officials came to Kartika’s house and took her away in a van on what was supposed to be a four-hour road journey to a prison near Kuala Lumpur, where the caning was to be carried out.
But they returned about 30 minutes later, saying they had received ‘’instructions from the higher powers’’ to release her, said Kartika’s father, Shukarno Abdul Muttalib.
