The 47-year-old owner of a rubber plantation had returned home early on Wednesday after a gambling session and had gone to wake his wife for sex, said Kuantan city deputy police chief Zulkifli Taha.
"He went into the bedroom and woke up his wife as he wanted to have sex, but she refused as she was feeling unwell and was having a headache," Zulkifli was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.
"The man became angry and took a pail of formic acid from outside the house and splashed it on his wife's face and body," he said.
The couple's teenage children alerted an aunt and rushed the victim, aged in her 30's, to a nearby hospital where she was said to be in stable condition despite sustaining serious injuries.
The suspect surrendered himself at a nearby police station shortly afterwards, the report said.
