The 5.9-magnitude quake hit at 0103 IST on Tuesday at a depth of 35 kilometres, off the archipelago which lies some 232 kilometres southwest of Sibolga on the west coast of Sumatra.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties and no tsunami warning was issued.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
