Pakistan’s former president general Pervez Musharraf returned home on Sunday after nearly four years of self-imposed exile to fight elections despite the possibility of arrest and death threats from the Taliban.

Musharraf, who vowed to risk his life to “save” the country, hopes to regain influence in the general election scheduled for May 11. He will face stiff competition, including from former PM Nawaz Sharif, whom he ousted in a military takeover.

Musharraf landed in Karachi in the afternoon but took several hours to leave the airport because of security reasons. He has already been granted pre-arrest bail in several cases.
