The bombing happened on Thursday in Helmand province, NATO forces said in a statement that did not give further details on the incident or the service member's nationality. The international force typically waits for national authorities to announce casualties.

Separately on Thursday, US forces said Afghan army and coalition troops killed 30 militants in a firefight in Helmand's Gereshk district. The troops were patrolling in a militant-heavy area when they started receiving gunfire and returned fire, the US said in a statement.

One Afghan soldier was injured during the operation, the statement said.

On Friday, Afghan and coalition forces killed three militants in eastern Logar province when fighting broke out during a raid targeting a bomb-making cell, a separate US statement said. One militant was captured in the incident in Logar's Baraki Barak district, the US said.
