Barry Hoffman, Pakistan's consul general in Boston, says the family of Mohammad Shafiq Rahman had rounded up the $10,000 to secure his release only to learn the judge revoked bail at the urging of immigration officials.
Rahman is one of three Pakistani men in the New England region charged with immigration violations as authorities investigated the May 1 attempted car bombing.
Faisal Shahzad pleaded guilty to 10 charges in the Times Square case.
According to Hoffman, Rahman knew Shahzad, but they hadn't had contact in years.
