Terrorists struck at heavily-guarded PNS Mehran on Sunday night and destroyed two surveillance aircraft. The siege ended on Monday after all the terrorists were killed. Ten security personnel died in the attack.

Bashir said: We are trying to relocate the naval base and other vital installations away from residential areas."

Associated Press of Pakistan quoted the top naval official as saying that the effective security of naval facilities was becoming difficult due to thickly-crowded residential areas around the Mehran base.

He explained that when the naval installations were planned and built, they were away from the city. There has now been a rapid growth of residential areas around the base.
