Pope Benedict XVI says he is praying for calm and civility in Madagascar following deadly protests in the Indian Ocean nation.

Benedict says he is very concerned about the violence and invites all the faithful to pray for a "return to the harmony of souls, to social calm and civil coexistence."

Benedict made the comments during his Sunday noon blessing in St. Peter's Square.

Weeks of protests between the established order and a young politician escalated on Saturday when soldiers opened fire on anti-government protesters.
