Presidential election date announced

The Presidential election in Sri Lanka would be held on January 26 in 2010. The election date was announced by the commissioner of election, Dayananda Dissanayake, at a media briefing on Friday.

He added that nominations for the election would be accepted from between 9 am and 11 am on December 17.

Incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former chief of defence staff general Sarath Fonseka have so far emerged as the two strongest candidates for the election.
