Russia in operation against Georgia: Prez Mikheil

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili accused Russia of conducting a "large-scale military operation" against Georgia after Tbilisi said Russian aircraft had bombed two Georgian towns.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili accused Russia on Friday of conducting a "large-scale military operation" against Georgia after Tbilisi said Russian aircraft had bombed two Georgian towns.

"I call on the Russian Federation to stop bombing peaceful Georgian towns," he said in a televised address to the nation.

The pro-Western president said Georgian forces had freed the "greater part" of the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, as fighting raged there between Georgian forces and separatists.

"We have mobilised thousands of reservists," Saakashvili said. "I ask you not to be afraid of the attacks."
