"Vow, they are either dead or they are running like hell," Franks, the commander of US forces in Iraq, told reporters at Bagram airbase 50 kilometres north of Kabul.

"That is the case with the leadership of the regime inside Iraq," he said.

General Franks was paying a flying visit to Afghanistan to visit coalition troops. He came here from Qatar and was due to return there later in the day.

When asked about lessons the US has learnt in Afghanistan and that would be applied in Iraq, he said: "As one works to take down that regime it is terribly important to be prepared to provide simultaneously humanitarian assistance to the people."

Franks met with around 300 troops at the base from different countries who are working under the coalition command to maintain peace and help stablise the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
