Strong quake hits off Papua New Guinea: geologists

A strong 6.3 magnitude quake struck off Papua New Guinea, US geologists said, but there was no tsunami warning.

A strong 6.3 magnitude quake struck off Papua New Guinea, US geologists said, but there was no tsunami warning.

The quake struck at 0415 IST with its epicentre located 28 km east of the town of Lae, New Guinea and at a depth of 66 km, the United States Geological Survey said.

There was no immediate alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, based in Hawaii.
