Dogan news agency television showed anti-terrorism police wearing black ski masks and brandishing automatic assault rifles during a raid on Tuesday in the southern city of Gaziantep, where a clash with suspected al-Qaida militants killed five people last year.

Dogan says police detained a suspect who has been to Afghanistan recently, and his wife. CNN-Turk television says more suspects allegedly affiliated with al-Qaida were detained in coordinated raids in the southern city of Sanliurfa and central city of Konya.

Turkish officials say dozens of Islamic militants from Turkey have had military training in al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan.
