The IED exploded in Alam Godar area in Khyber tribal agency as the convoy was passing through a busy market, officials said.
Three security personnel were injured and a vehicle damaged in the explosion, they said.
Soon after the attack, troops cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Three suspects were arrested and taken to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
Attacks on security forces in the volatile tribal belt have killed many troops and injured scores of others.
Though areas like Khyber located close to Peshawar were peaceful even after the Taliban insurgency began, they have now virtually become "no go" zones for security forces after sunset, sources said.
