"We have arrested two men, both Indonesians," Denpasar police chief Gede Alit Widana told reporters. Hiromi Shimada, 41, whose naked and bound body was discovered in a rented house near the popular tourist beach of Kuta on Saturday, had been stabbed repeatedly in the stomach, police said.
"There were 25 wounds, six from being stabbed with a sharp object. She died from excessive blood loss," forensic expert Ida Bagus Putu Alit said. A police officer investigating the case said one of the suspects had denied killing the woman.
"During interrogation, he said the woman was in the bathroom with the other suspect. Suddenly, she came out of the room all covered in blood and screaming. There was confusion and then she was killed," he said, requesting anonymity.
In September, the partially decomposed body of another Japanese tourist, 33-year-old Rika Sano, was found along with her scattered belongings in the same area after a suspected kidnapping. Another Indonesian man has been arrested in connection with the Sano case.
