Brown went into a meeting with President Hu Jintao after his arrival, embassy press officer David Shaw told AFP, adding that the British leader would meet later in the day with Premier Wen Jiabao.
Brown will attend the Games closing ceremony on Sunday during which the Olympic flag will be formally handed over by China to Britain. London is hosting the 2012 Olympics.
Brown's office has said he would raise the issue of Chinese human rights abuses during his audiences with China's leaders, following a Chinese crackdown on unrest in Tibet that began in March and has drawn world criticism.
