Bush, 83, was escorted to the hospital yesterday by private car after suffering "a little bit of pain" Jim McGrath told the daily.

Doctors were running tests. "So far everything is negative," McGrath told the Chronicle. "Fortunately, it looks like it's going to be a small matter," he added.

Barbara Bush's husband, former president George Bush, 84, was staying with her at hospital, McGrath added.

George Bush was US president 1989-1993.

The local Fox 26 News radio quoted officials as saying Barbara Bush had been feeling ill for about a week, but was expected to be released from hospital late Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving, on Thursday, with her family.
