Officials said that 750 people have been treated in hospital after 8,000 structures were destroyed in the massive twister Sunday that cut a swath of destruction four miles (6.4 kilometers) long and three quarters of a mile (more than a kilometer) wide through the town of Joplin.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the previous highest death toll from a single tornado was recorded in Flint, Michigan in 1953 with 116 fatalities.
Officials said that the tornado ranks as the 8th deadliest in America's history.
