The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on Wednesday said that the people and politicians of Tamil Nadu have dispelled assumptions that they would not come forward to help the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka at a time when the Sinhala majority government was attempting to wipe them out.

In a letter to the people and political leaders of the Indian state, the Tigers said that they “were inspired by the expression of solidarity that had come from all the political leaders of Tamil Nadu.” The open letter in Tamil was signed by LTTE’s political chief, B Nadesan.

The pro-LTTE website, TamilNet said: “the LTTE statement described the plight of the thousands of Tamils uprooted from their homes and villages and forced to seek refuge under trees due to the ‘genocidal war’ launched by the Mahinda Rajapaska regime.”

The letter is sure to trigger a fresh round of controversy about the role that Sri Lanka’s biggest neighbour is likely to play in the war between LTTE and army.
