Roy review by Anupama Chopra: This is a failed fantasy

At the end of Roy, a famous film director named Kabir Grewal is heading to the success party of his latest release Guns III. He pauses and exclaims:

Pata nahin yeh film kaise ban gayi

? My sentiments exactly.

Roy is a painfully affected and spectacularly tedious drama about a filmmaker, his struggle to create and his love affair with another director. In an interview, Vikramjit Singh, who wrote and directed Roy, said that he was inspired by the love affair between Quentin Tarantino and Sofia Coppola. He also added that his actors Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez were reading up on the two directors to get into their characters. Which only makes Roy more unintentionally funny than it is.

Roy is the ultimate showbiz fantasy in which Kabir is more rockstar than filmmaker. Played by the gorgeous Mr. Rampal, Kabir is a rich, successful playboy. Kabir’s pretensions at being an auteur leave him with plenty of time to drink with Ayesha, a London-based filmmaker, played by Jacqueline. Interspersed in this, is the film that Kabir is making about an international art thief named Roy, played by Ranbir Kapoor.

Vikramjit strains to create a moody, artistic angst. But it’s impossible to take any of it seriously. The film’s credits read: Ranbir Kapoor in a dynamic role. Even an actor as exciting as him doesn’t possess the dynamism to lift this train-wreck.
