The Punjab and Haryana high court has stayed the arrest of senior journalist and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kanwar Sandhu in connection with December 2015 ‘unauthorised jail entry’ case.
Seeking state government’s response on Sandhu’s petition by July 28, the bench of MMS Bedi issued interim direction to the police that in case of his arrest, he should be released on bail. The high court also directed the investigating officer to produce record pertaining to his indictment as an accused.
The high court was hearing anticipatory bail petition of Sandhu filed in an incident wherein he, along with some jail officials of Central Jail Patiala, were booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code and violation of the Prisons Act.
Sandhu was booked for alleged unauthorised entry to the jail to meet radical leader Balwant Singh Rajoana on December 19, 2015. Sandhu had gone there with dismissed cop Gurmeet Singh Pinky and had gained access to the high-security prison to “interview” Rajoana. During the course of the interview, Rajoana had allegedly attacked Sandhu. Punjab Police On December 24, 2015, registered an FIR against some jail officials and Sandhu.
