World Music Day: Fête de la Musique makes Delhiites celebrate music and its diversity
On World Music Day, June 21, head to Fête de la Musique with your squad for an unforgettable musical evening of enthralling performances by Knight Shades and DJ Roli.
Fête de la Musique or World Music Day is a music celebration that takes place annually on the day of summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. And this year, too, Delhiites can revel in all-day musical celebrations — that were initiated in France in 1982 to promote music, especially of street musicians.

The event titled Fête de la Musique 2018, organised by Alliance Française de Delhi (AFD), is one place for music lovers to tune into live music from diverse genres. Jean-Françoise Ramon, director, AFD, says, “Fête de la Musique is the festival of all music genres and of all music makers from children to adults and from amateurs to professionals. Created in France on 21 June 1982 by Jack Lang, the French minister of culture, is now celebrated in more than 100 countries in the world. AFD has been celebrating this day since last 20 years with a goal to promote new talent. Like every year, this year too we’re hoping to pull larger crowds to celebrate the occasion.”

This year, the event will have Faites De La Musique — a music competition, Knight Shades in Concert, and DJ Night with Roli. The competition, Faites de la Musique, is only open for students of Alliance Francaise. Namrata Mathur, a student says, “I’m very excited to participate in this event. It’s a great opportunity for musicians like me to showcase our talent. I’m planning to sing an English-French version of Cheap Thrills by Sia.”

But, it’s not just the participants of the music competition who are excited. Sagar Hirani, co-founder of Knight Shades, which released its first music video ‘No’ this May, says, ”All four of us (band members) are really glad that we’re getting a chance to perform for the first time at the World Music Day fest in Delhi. We’re really looking forward to the crowd since we’ve heard it’s always a great one at this festival, and meet people who appreciate the kind of music we play. The songs we’ll be playing will include some covers and originals. We’ll also perform some French songs when requested.”

And returning to this fest with his uber cool mixes will be DJ Roli. “I really enjoyed the energy of the crowd last year, and I’m happy to perform again this year. My playlist for this event would be a mix of French and other international songs. French music is so diversified; I hope to showcase it right and make people dance to it,” says DJ Roli.
