Forty-two cases of counterfeit notes were reported in 2015, up from 32 cases in 2014. In Bhopal, the crime branch has so far seized fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 14.92 lakh from nine people in the last two years.

Two days ago, a uncle-nephew duo was arrested in Bhopal and fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 1.6 lakh seized from them. In January 13 last year, a 51-year-old man was arrested for trying to circulate counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 5.6 lakhs in Bhopal. In February 18 the same year, police arrested two men, including a resident from Bengal, who were trying to circulate counterfeit notes with a face value of ` 2.99 lakh.

“The increase in counterfeit currency cases is due to increased alertness and strong intelligence to nab racketeers trying to circulate fake currency in the state,” DGP Surendra Sinh told HT. “We are taking pre-emptive actions to nab criminals before they are able to circulate fake notes in the market.”

Additional superintendent of police, crime, Shailendra Singh Chauhan said police are focussing more on rackets involved in circulating fake currency notes rather than just arresting those circulating fake notes.

“We have developed a full-fledged network with more efficient and capable informers. We are focussing on the origin from where the fake currency is dispatched…,” Chauhan said.

He said racketeers were trying to circulate fake currency notes in rural areas. “This is due to increased vigilance and alertness of police in urban areas. Racketeers are circulating fake notes of small denomination. We are increasing vigilance in rural areas to racketeers for checking fake currency circulation.”
