On March 16, Iranian band Barobax Corp sent a legal notice to Agent Vinod’s music composer Pritam Chakraborty, producers Illuminati Films Private Ltd and Eros International Media, and music company Super Cassettes Ltd. The band claimed that the initial portion of the film’s track Pungi… was lifted without changes from the band’s popular number Soosan Khanoom… composed in 2010 and registered on June 30 under the Copyright Act in Canada.
On Wednesday, they moved the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on the Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer, along with a restraining order from using the track in the film. But on Thursday, the case was heard and dismissed. And Agent Vinod opened on Friday as planned. Jubilant co-producer Dinesh Vijan says, "They were talking about copyright violation, but their own papers were not in order. And there was little similarity between the tracks as alleged." Quiz him on whether this was a publicity stunt by the foreign band and Dinesh says diplomatically, "All I can say is that the song has been on air for three weeks and it is the no. 1 track across charts. If there was a reason to believe it was a copy, then why did the matter come up only on the weekend before the film’s release? Anyway, all that is history now. Sriram (director Sriram Raghavan) and I watched the morning show in the theatres with the audience and we were encouraged to see that they were getting the nuances. The buzz was positive." VIDEO
