Amitabh Bachchan accuses Twitter of reducing his number of followers, threatens to quit
Claiming to have lost followers, Amitabh Bachchan has threatened to “get off” Twitter. His tweet comes at a time when US agencies have started an investigation over the proliferation of fake accounts.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has threatened to leave Twitter, accusing the social media giant of reducing the number of his followers. His tweet comes after many prominent Twitter users across the world lost more than a million followers as federal and state agencies in the US started investigating shadowy agencies that sell fake followers. The investigation was launched after a report in New York Times.
Late Wednesday, the actor wrote on Twitter, “T 2599 - TWITTER ..!!!?? you reduced my number of followers .. !!??HAHAHAHAHAHAHA .. !! thats a joke .. time to get off from you .. thank you for the ride .. there are many ‘other’ fish in the sea - and a lot more exciting !!”
It is not clear if Bachchan “lost” followers is related to the same investigation. According to Twitter counter, the actor has lost about 60,000 followers. While Twitter India refused comment, it referred to an earlier statement made by the parent company, “The tactics used by Devumi on our platform and others as described by today’s NYT article violate our policies and are unacceptable to us. We are working to stop them and any companies like them.”
With 3,29,41,837 followers, superstar Shah Rukh Khan is now the industry’s most followed personality on the micro-blogging site. The Pink star, on the other hand, has 3,29,02,320 million followers, ANI reported Wednesday.
The 74-year-old is extremely active on social media platforms and uses the medium to share updates about his personal and professional lives with his fans and well-wishers. He was also one of the first few celebs to start a blog and update it on a daily basis.
In the US, NY Times reported that entertainers, entrepreneurs, athletes and media figures were among those who lost followers. Most of these followers or artificial engagement was bought from a company called Devumi. Twitter said on Saturday that it would take action against Devumi’s practices.
On the work front, Amitabh will be seen with Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in Thugs of Hindostan. He is also working on 102 Not Out that also features Rishi Kapoor in lead role.
