He prefers to avoid “nonsensical bickering and commenting to trolls on social media”. Perhaps that’s why Anil Kapoor says with utmost confidence that he has never made any controversial headlines or trended on social media for the wrong reasons.

“Even those who try to create any controversy around me — they can’t, because I am always very honest and truthful,” says Kapoor, adding that one can pretend to a certain level on public platforms, “but you do get exposed some day, and then get into a controversy. If I’m not a certain way or if I try to project what I’m not, it can go wrong”.

The veteran actor believes in “speaking mindfully” and says he would never jump into something that he is not prepared for. That’s why he has repeatedly turned down offers to speak at various public forums. “People call me to talk on various subjects. ‘Aap iske baare mein aakar gyaan dijiye humein’. Arrey gyaan hoga toh dunga naa... (laughs). I’m not meant for these forums, as I’m not prepared for them. If you want me to be a part of the forums, you [have to] give me the time to prepare. I’m not going to comment on something which I’m not aware of. You might judge me from the fact that I’m not aware of it or I’m not well-read, but that is okay,” shares the actor, who was recently seen in the comedy Total Dhamaal.

Kapoor, 62, says he is “still evolving as an actor and a person” by doing challenging roles. “Whenever I am offered a particular role or when I am asked to do anything by my fans, people say, ‘Sir, aap toh yeh araam se kar lenge’. The expectations are so high that I have to keep working on myself,” says the actor, admitting that people often tell him that he is being hard on himself in the way he works.

“But for me, I’m trying to raise the bar. Everything I do, it is mental and physical work, and I try my best to give my best,” adds the actor, who recently produced the web series, Selection Day, on an OTT platform.
