Ten years ago, Vinay Shukla received accolades for his film Godmother that starred Shabana Azmi. The film went on to receive six national awards. However Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche (2002) bombed at the box office and then one by one, his projects refused to take off.
“Nobody was willing to back the kinds of films I wanted to make. Times are changing today and we filmmakers now have more avenues to showcase our work because of multiplexes,” says Shukla, who is back with Mirch, that’s slated to release on December 10.
His struggle to make a film in the last eight years is reflected in Manav’s character, who is a struggling filmmaker in Mirch. “If you want to make a film in Bollywood, you need a star and need to be willing to do the usual stuff to find producers,” says Shukla.
However the endless wait didn’t deter Shukla, who says his inner confidence, belief and faith helped him tide through tough times. “I always knew I would be able to strike back and make better films.”
Inspired by a story from Panchtantra, the premise of the film is about how a woman is caught red-handed with a lover, by her husband, and yet she manages to wriggle out of it. The first part features Raima Sen and Rajpal Yadav. The second part, set in the medieval era, stars Konkana Sen Sharma as a queen married to a very old King (Prem Chopra). The third, shows Shreyas Talpade and Sen mouthing Hinglish dialect. Boman Irani and Sharma form the fourth story.
