I’ll never direct a sex comedy again, says Satyameva Jayate director Milap Zaveri

Milap Zaveri, who made a name for himself writing dialogues for films like Grand Masti, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and director Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade, says he was underselling himself with such work.

Milap Zaveri’s Satyameva Jayate releases on August 15, 2018.

Milap Zaveri became popular for his adult comedies but at this juncture in his career, he has realised that he was limiting himself as a filmmaker and now wants to explore other genres.

Zaveri wrote dialogues for sex comedies like Grand Masti, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and directed Sunny Leone-starrer Mastizaade.

“I’ll never direct a sex comedy again. I have nothing left to do in that genre. I’ve exhausted myself as a creative person in those movies. I have nothing against the genre. I’d keep watching them but as a director, as a writer, I’m done with it. It doesn’t excite me anymore,” Zaveri told PTI.

Though he was a writer for films like Ek Villain, Shootout at Wadala among others, Zaveri was mostly associated with adult comedies- something which bothered him when Mastizaade tanked at the box office.

“The tag didn’t bother me till Mastizaade failed. After that it bothered me. I felt I was underselling myself. I was capable of something more. You tend to get slotted in what you choose. I chose to write and direct sex comedies so I got slotted.

“That’s my fault. Only I could help myself get out of that tag so I made Raakh, a short film. That was important because I was appreciated and people thought I can do this too,” he adds.

Zaveri says the failure of the film put a dent, as several of his projects found trouble taking off.

“At that point I was ready to do anything because I needed work. I was signed by Kumar Mangat sir for a film called Paagpanti it didn’t happen because no actor wanted to work with me. I was supposed to do a film with Pritish Nandy.

“But that didn’t happen again because no hero wanted to do it. After Raakh was appreciated, I decided I want to make an action film,” he says.

He finally zeroed on Satyameva Jayate, his latest action-drama featuring John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee.

Zaveri took one and a half months to write Satyameva Jayate, but the idea was with him since 18 years. Initially wanting to turn it into a web series, he started writing it as a feature after his industry friends suggested him the same.

“I would like to continue making powerful films which have drama, action and heroism. I want to make heroic films. Next, I plan to make an action film. There’s dialoguebaazi, action, love story, music. I’m making it with Nikkhil Advani. We are working out things and will make an announcement soon,” he says.

Satyameva Jayate is scheduled to release on August 15.
