The Juhu police on Tuesday said actor Jiah Khan, who was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on Monday night, had tried to commit suicide a few months earlier and had frequent mood swings.
"It is learnt Jiah had attempted suicide by slitting her wrist around eight months ago. We are probing further," said a source in the Juhu police station.
The police also recorded the statement of actor Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj, 22, as she had last interacted with him. Sooraj reportedly told them they were in a happy relationship, with only minor quarrels, for the past year after they met on a social networking website.
Jiah’s mother Rabea Khan reportedly told police she was depressed for past two months probably due to the relationship as she did not have any financial troubles, but did not make direct allegations against Sooraj. Police also quoted her as saying.
Jiah would often have mood swings. A pack of Ayurvedic sleeping pills was recovered from her bedroom.
“The preliminary autopsy report revealed she died due to hanging. As of now, we have recorded an accidental death. She last spoke to Sooraj and we have recorded his statement. If anyone is found guilty of pushing her towards suicide, appropriate charges will be pressed against them," said Vishwas Nangre-Patil, additional commissioner of police, west region.
Police also recorded the statement of Aditya Pancholi as Rabea Khan was out with him and a few friends for dinner when Jiah ended her life. They have seized Jiah’s laptop and cell phone for analysis. Murder has been ruled out as the apartment had a biometric lock which could be opened only by Jiah or her mother.
Sooraj’s mother Zarina Wahab said: “I just know they were in a relationship for the past year. Every relationship has its ups and downs, but that does not justify anyone ending their life. My heart goes out to Rabea.”
Jiah’s last rites will be performed on Wednesday after sister returns from London.
