Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor has been receiving accolades from all ends for his portrayal of Sanjay Dutt in the actor’s biopic Sanju but the film’s producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, recently claimed he wanted Ranveer Singh, not Ranbir, to play the lead role. The Barfi star has now reacted to the comment in an interaction with Peeping Moon.
Talking about Vidhu Vinod’s comment about Ranveer, Ranbir said, “I don’t know about his regrets and anything of that kind. But I am really happy that it came into my life. And it came into my life when I was really in need of inspiration. You know, it’s a luxury that every actor finds inspiration in every film they do. This came with that. So, I am very happy that it came into my life,” Ranbir told the tabloid.
In an interview to Telegraph, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had said, “When he (director Rajkumar Hirani) told me about Ranbir, I wasn’t happy at all. I thought someone else, like Ranveer Singh, could play this role much better. I thought Ranveer had the flamboyance, the emotional depth as well as the ability to change himself completely to play Sanjay Dutt. But Raju was adamant that Ranbir would be perfect. And when we started shooting and Ranbir became Sanjay Dutt, I had to kind of eat my words..”
Ranbir had also spoken about Salman Khan saying that Sanjay Dutt himself, and not any other actor, should have been cast to play the last 8-10 years in the actor’s life in Sanju. “For Sanju, I was thinking why is somebody else playing this bit? The last 8-10 years. You cannot do justice to that. Sanju should have played the last bit,” Salman said in a group interview in Mumbai earlier this month.
Ranbir had reacted to the comment in a media interaction and said, “It has never happened that a person played himself in his own biopic. This destroys the effect of a character. I knew that I will be compared to Sanjay Dutt and that is why I have tried my best to do justice to his role. Whether people see me in 40-year old Sanjay Dutt’s avatar or 20-year old, they should feel that they are watching an artiste who is playing Sanjay Dutt. It is correct that I cannot become a second Sanjay Dutt.”
Ranbir plays Sanjay in the film that also stars Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Karishma Tanna and Vicky Kaushal, among several others. The film is slated to hit theatres on June 29.
