Directed by Nikhil Advani, Hero is based on Subhash Ghai's 1983 film of the same name. The original featured Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri in the lead roles. It made the viewers notice the raw appeal of Jackie Shroff. Laxmikant-Pyarelal's hit music was another attraction of Hero. All the songs of the film were chartbusters.

The new film presents Sooraj Pancholi as a gangster who kidnaps a police officer's daughter Athiya Shetty and then falls in love with her. Aditya Pancholi and Tigmanshu Dhulia have also played pivotal roles in Hero.
