Suhana Khan’s cover photoshoot for the August issue of Vogue India has attracted much criticism online for principally two reasons. Some said that there was no need for presenting a young girl, still in her teens, in this way. The other criticism was that Suhana had achieved nothing to deserve to be on the cover of the magazine.

While the family, father Shah Rukh Khan and mother Gauri, haven’t spoken about it, photographer Errikos Andreou, who shot the controversial pictures, has clarified his stance on the matter.

Speaking to the Quint, he explained, how contrary to claims by many on Twitter that Suhana looked too sexualized, he said that when he saw her through the lens, all he could see is a “fresh young girl having fun as she enters adulthood.”

He said, “When I saw her, I saw a very beautiful, fresh kid and it was this freshness and innocence that I wanted to capture. But then once she started posing in front of the camera, I realised that this is not a child - this is actually a woman. A young woman who celebrates both her youth and her womanhood. In some pictures she looks innocent, in some pictures she looks sexy. But the sexiness that comes out is not a forced thing. It was a very natural thing. This is who she is.”

He acknowledged that the entire set up for her first-ever shoot was done to present her to the world. “It was clearly, a platform to introduce Suhana.”

He explained how, when he was scrolling through Twitter and came across statements like ‘Stop sexualizing kids!’, he was taken aback because from the position he was seeing it, Suhana’s personality came out rather naturally on the camera. “She was just having fun entering her adulthood.”

On August 1, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri shared the pictures and a video of Suhana’s photo shoot. Sharing a picture with him launching the issue, SRK wrote: “Holding her in my arms again thanks to Vogue. ‘What imperfect carriers of love we are...” except when it comes to our children. So sending u all my love & a big hug. Hello Suhana Khan!”

On Twitter, the decision to launch Suhana with a magazine cover was not appreciated. The magazine was called out for promoting nepotism in Bollywood by featuring a superstar’s child, undeservedly. “I have nothing against star kids and tbh it is not even about nepotism but to see Suhana Khan in the cover page of the August issue of @VOGUEIndia with NO reason as to why she should have been is ridiculous. Is she a model? No. A socialite? No. An actor? No. A change maker? No,” wrote a disappointed Twitter user.
