SAARC history

The organisation was established on December 8, 1985 by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. Afghanistan is the latest entry.

Roughly covering a population of 1.47 billion, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is the largest regional organisation in the world. An eco-political organisation of seven countries in Southern Asia, the organisation was established on December 8, 1985 by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. Afghanistan is the latest entry and has been formally accepted as a member at the ongoing 14th summit in New Delhi.
