A look at January’s top 10 cars:

Maruti Alto: Alto has proved that size does not, in fact, matter. The smallest hatchback from the Maruti Suzuki family grabbed the top spot by selling 21,411 units in January, which is more than a 70 per cent rise in sales compared to the same period last year. In January 2022, it had sold 12,342 units. The brand new Alto model packed with many features was launched at a starting price of 3.99 lakh (ex-showroom) in 2022.

Maruti WagonR: While December 2022 saw WagonR at the bottom of the top 10 list, it has jumped to the number two position for January with 20,466 units sold. In December last year, less than half of this figure was sold. However, WagonR saw 20,334 units being sold in the first month of last year.

Maruti Swift: Although Maruti Swift sales decreased from 19,108 units in January 2022 to 16,440 units in the same month this year, it has claimed the third spot owing to the significant spike in sales compared to December, when it sold 12,061 units. The new generation of the hatchback is expected to be launched later in 2023.

Maruti Baleno: The latest generation Balena continues to rule the consumer market with a huge rise in sales over a span of one year. One of the premium hatchbacks, 16,357 units of the model were sold last month, a massive jump from 6,791 units in January 2022.

Tata Nexon: Available in internal-combustion-engine (ICE) and electric vehicle models, Nexon is a reigning favourite in the SUV market. Sales soared from 13,816 units to 15,567 units when comparing last year and current year January records. The numbers are also up from December sales of 12,053 units.

Hyundai Creta: Creta has managed to retain its title as India's best-selling compact SUV despite its long waiting periods. Sales in the past year have seen a huge leap from 9,869 to 15,037 units in the same month of January. December recorded the sale of 10,205 units. The new generation Creta is set to arrive in India later in 2023.

Maruti Brezza: Compared to the old generation Vitara Brezza, which saw the sale of only 9,576 units in January 2022, the new generation Brezza has driven a push in sales from 11,200 units in December to 14,359 units last month.

Tata Punch: The smallest SUV from Tata Motors' is also its second best-seller. It clocked one of its best sales records till date with 12,006 units delivered last month. Since debuting in 2021, 10,027 and 10,586 units were sold in January and December 2022, respectively.

Maruti Eeco: One of the consistent performers, the Eeco van found 11,709 homes in January 2023. Sales have remained more or less the same with 10,528 and 10,581 units delivered in the first and last month of 2022, respectively.

Maruti Dzire: The lone sedan on the list, Maruti Dzire is still the leader of the segment so far with 11,317 units delivered in January. However, sales are slightly down compared to 11,997 units in December and 14,967 units in January 2022.
