Overspeeding in UAE will attract a fine of ₹65,000. Check updated traffic laws
The traffic laws in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were updated in May this year and fines will be imposed for overspeeding, reckless driving and driving under influence of drugs and or alcohol etc.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently updated its traffic laws and also the fines that will be charged for violating them.
According to the UAE’s government portal, “The UAE’s amended federal traffic law came into effect on 1 July 2017. The new regulations aim to further protect the lives of road users and reduce traffic casualties from about six per 100,000 people to three per 100,000 as per Vision 2021.”
The laws which were last updated in May this year, talk about speeding, the mandatory wearing of seat belts, fines for reckless driving, ignoring traffic signals and driving under the influence of drugs and or alcohol and using a phone while driving among others.
The laws also highlight the black points- stringent penalties imposed to discourage drivers from violating laws- which violators have to face.
The laws are as follows:
Overspeeding
> Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 80 kilometres (km) per hour will have to pay a fine of AED 3,000 ( ₹65,100). They will be slapped with 23 black points and their car will be impounded for 60 days, the government says.
Mandatory to wear seat belts
> According to the government portal, all passengers in a car including those in the rear seat have to mandatorily wear seat belts. Failure of this will cause the driver of the vehicle to pay a fine of AED 400 ( ₹8,680) and four black points will be imposed.
> Children up to four years of age must be provided with a child safety seat. Here too, the violation will lead to AED 400 and four black points.
> The government portal also says that passengers seated in the front seat should be at least 145 cm tall and not younger than ten years old.
Reckless driving
> Reckless driving in the UAE will attract a fine of AED 2,000 ( ₹43,400) and 23 black points and impounding of the vehicle for 60 days.
> The government portal also states that the same punishment will be applicable for drivers who endanger the lives of others.
> Some other violations covered are- blocking traffic, jumping red signals, sudden swerving and driving without a number plate.
Driving under influence of drugs and or alcohol
> Drivers caught driving under the influence of drugs and or alcohol will have their licence suspended for one year, starting from the day of the verdict. The court will decide the fine and/or jail term for such violators.
Using a phone while driving
> Using a phone while driving or any other distractions will cause the driver to pay AED 400 ( ₹8,680) as a fine and four black points will be imposed.
Some other violations for drivers listed by the UAE government include not leaving a safe distance between vehicles, using expired tyres, transporting passengers illegally and crowding around accident sites etc.
