Former Rajya Sabha member Birender Singh has asked the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) to refrain from campaigning for the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in the forthcoming Haryana assembly elections.
Talking to mediapersons at Taraori in the district on Monday, Singh said that it was for the first time in the history that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was marching towards forming government in the state on its own and its political allies should not meddle into it.
Taking strong exception to announcement that veteran Akali leader and Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal would be the star campaigners for the INLD, Singh said it was against the political "maryada".
"Agar Akali Dal ko Haryana mein aana hai to unhen BJP ke liye hi vote mangne chahiye. Akhirkar BJP aur Akali pichle bahut salon se Punjab me milkar chunav lad rahe hain. Lekin agar Akaliyon ko Om Prakash Chautala aur uski party se zayada hi pyar to unhe ghar pe baithna chahiye aur political maryada ka khayal rakhna chaihey (Akali Dal should seek votes for BJP as both parties are allies in Punjab)," he said.
Singh, who has recently quit the Congress to join the BJP, favoured electing a chief minister from the northern Haryana.
He said that northern belt of Haryana was known worldwide for its achievement in agriculture sector but the ineffective political representation had deprived the area is due share of development.
"Respective governments never paid any attention to north area of Haryana and if a CM is elected from here, the region would see new heights in the field of education, employment and healthcare," he said.
